This story came from the December 16, 2016 edition of the Columbian: “Beginning in the first days of her career, Evelyn Nagornyy had already faced some obstacles on her journey to realizing her dream of working on a pit crew for a racing squad. Thanks to a friendly donation from Dick Hannah Auto, buying tools won’t be one of them. Nagornyy, a 1st-year student in Clark College’s (CC) auto tech program, & other students currently in the program known as the Dick Hannah Initiative for Tech Education CC, got tool kits valued at $4,000. President Knight and Mr. Hannah, founder of Dick Hannah Auto, presented nice red tool units to those students in a short ceremony @ the school’s auto shop.
This program, recently began by pairing auto technology students with the dealers to gain some experience in the auto shop, along with a starter set of tools to assist in the classes. Students must finish the degree program and then do work-study in a Dick Hannah shop for 6-months after graduating. When they begin taking these classes and throughout the lengthy process, students also have paid internships @ Hannah, giving them some hands-on experience. Jason Crone is the instructor & program administrator for the auto technology projects.
Those in this program build a solid foundation within the industry before they actually begin taking classes. Gary Schuler is a corporate director for Dick Hannah says his company benefits also. Schuler worked for this college to assist in launching the program. Find a good-quality technician is increasingly difficult he says. Nagornyy, is the only female in the room, and hadn’t worked on cars prior tostarting the program at Clark College. She has been more challenged than she expected, and her parents were slightly skeptical. Nagornyy’s passion for automobiles & years watching her godmother work on her 66 Ford Mustang had driven the 19-year-old into the program. Having the proper tools eliminates a significant barrier for Nagornyy, who calculated her educational costs at $12,000. The full article is available here.
