On December 7, 2016 John Irwin posted this report on Auto News: “Thieves might be using a new device to break into & make off with cars that have push-button ignitions with no traces of evidence, & doesn’t appear to be a solution yet. According to the Nat. Insurance Bureau today, it attained & tested a so-called “mysterious device” that can let thieves to break into a car without leaving any of the typical items of evidence such as broken glass. The two-piece device operates by detecting a signal from the car’s key unit from up to 10 feet away. Once the signal is established, the unit transfers the data to a relay-type box which can unlock & start the ignition.
Spokesman Roger Morris says CarMax tried the device over 30 models in the greater Chicago area. He says they were able to access roughly 19 of them and drive off. Countering these units could prove difficult. Hacking problems have gained momentum in recent years as cars became more interconnected. Often individuals think their car has been towed. The Alliance of Automobile Makers, said cyber-safety is still one of the big priorities in the auto industry. Some automakers might include a series of repetitive systems & mechanisms as one way to enhance vehicle safety.
Auto makers must be meticulous in making sure they hone their technology to counter such devices. For vehicle owners, they should keep valuable objects out their vehicles, and their key fobs with them at all times. Police & auto owners should also keep a close watch for distrustful activity nearby parked cars. Completely averting such thefts might be impossible, since thieves are within a radius close enough to pick up on the fob’s signal. A thief with abilities in managing computer devices might build one on his or her own, making it difficult to locate sources. These strides in technology are possible, and the development of countermeasures is needed.” The article can be viewed in its entirety at: http://www.autonews.com/article/20161207/RETAIL04/161209877/mystery-device-helps-thieves-steal-cars-with-push-button-ignitions
